Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain Coding Technology from the Perspective of Islamic Law

Prof. Dr. Hasan Doğan · Chief of Cabinet to the President, Ambassador

Abstract

The concept of money has taken different forms throughout history, shaped by need and by technological development.

Following electronic money, cryptocurrency now occupies the agenda of everyone from small savers to large states. Cryptocurrency, and the system on which it rests, needs to be examined by religious and legal scholarship as well as by informatics and economics, and to be placed correctly within the wider picture of which it is a part.

Rather than being for or against the cryptocurrency system in advance, the study takes account of the transformation undergone by concepts and systems such as the stock exchange, banking, insurance and credit, compares the different approaches taken, and assesses cryptocurrency from the perspective of Islamic law.
